Freelance Artist, Facilitator, Expressive Arts Facilitator (Conflict Transformation
and Peacebuilding) and Project Co-ordinator.
Originally trained as a weaver, Carole’s work covers different approaches which intertwine around the Expressive Arts, creativity, community development, education and leadership.
With 20 years experience of delivering courses, initiating and facilitating projects mainly for adults in both community art and education settings across Northern Ireland. Carole has devised arts projects for those in trauma, used creative approaches to community development, delivered leadership training, access to the arts programmes and taught business and professional development skills to those in the creative industries. Her work is seen and recognised at both local and international levels.
A key example of her work was the “Petals of Hope, Rays of Light” project which Carole initiated and orchestrated with support from Omagh District Council in the immediate aftermath of the bomb in 1998. In response to the hundreds of flowers left in the town following the atrocity, the project involved 150+ children and volunteers from the community who made hand-made paper with the flora. Each of the bereaved families received a picture and three large art pieces were made for Omagh, Buncranna and Madrid.
Fifteen years on, Carole returned to Omagh with writer Malachi O’Doherty and worked with some of the original participants, gathering written, audio and digital stories of their expressive experience: Remembering: Petals of Hope

She is especially keen to be involved in the conception of ideas of projects and keen to see them through to their conclusion and evaluation.
Her qualifications include a Bachelors Degree with Honours in Design (Constructed Textiles), Postgraduate Certificate in Further and Higher Education and an Advanced Diploma in Management Practice. In June 2017, she graduated with a Masters in Expressive Arts in Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding (cited with Honours for Practice) from the European Graduate School, Switzerland.
Her thesis title is “In Relation to Traumatised Communities, does the Art Making Process and Accompaniment Lead to Transformation - If so, how?” and her wider work currently explores this context.

Graduated with a Masters in Expressive Arts in Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding (cited with Honours for practice) from the European Graduate School (EGS) in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. Supervisor for her Internship was Carrie MacLeod (Vancouver), Professor John Paul Lederach (Colorado) and Stevie Johnston (Belfast). Supervisor for Thesis was Michelle LeBaron (Vancouver.)
Carole uses creative methods through the arts to address conflicts within teams, communities and across cultures. By suspending control, new themes emerge. In short, this approach allows ways to use the arts for peace and co-existence.
Work is done with all kinds of community groups, organisations and businesses to develop imagination, sensitivity and awareness of self and others. This opens up creative and innovative discoveries and insights which can be used in a variety of contexts.
This intermodal, reflective and explorative approach uses techniques that in given situations, can include visual arts, painting, photography, drawing, creative writing, drama, music, movement. With an emphasis on the process, participants conclude with work which demonstrates wider expressions.
